However, I do not agree. I believe that evil is inherent in man. I believe that God, whether directly or indirectly, created evil. St. Augustine was one of the great theologians in church history. He had the idea that man was inherently and totally good until the fall. After the fall, man was both good and evil. A dualistic thought, but nonetheless a very Christian statement because we now had the ability to sin. From that point on, man was not prone to evil, but was born with evil in him. This is what drives us to sin in the first place. How could we perverse a good without having that perverseness, evil, in us already? Augustine himself identifies with this in his famous story of the theft of the pears. When he stole those pears he didn't have ?any desire to enjoy the things [he] stole, but only the stealing of them and the sin.? What he's saying is that there was no reason for him to steal the pears, no need or desire. It was simply the fact that it was evil and sinful that drove him to commit his pointless theft. He realized that there was a side of him that was naturally drawn to the enjoyment of evil. He r ealized that he had evil in him. And that part of him is what delighted in sin. Augustine admitted that it could not have been a perversion of a good because if that were so, and he was naturally all good, then he would have felt remorse. He would not have felt such pleasure in the act. It was the evil that part of him craved. How could anyone enjoy such sin if it wasn't already in him or her? The reason is that he had evil in him, we all do. If we didn't, then we wouldn't sin. Some would say that we are good and the gift of free choice allows us to sin. But if that were true, then we still wouldn't sin. How would we be able to perverse good if the ability to do it isn't in us? The ability and desire too perverse is evil. So if we do possess that ability and desire then we must possess evil. This paradox goes back a long time before Augustine. It goes back a long time before man. Students enter university from a vast array of personal contexts. Such experiences influence an individuals understanding and communication skills, therefore the university must make allowances for such varied experiences in the teaching of its programs. By offering varied and alternative methods of learning, it is believed that a greater number of students will have greater interest and knowledge retention, leading to successful knowledge transmission. This essay will review some methods that can be utilised for academic success. One aspect of knowledge transmission in university learning is to understand academic discourse. Ballard Clanchy (1988, p.8) assert that Becoming literate in the university involves learning to read the culture, learning to come to terms with its distinctive rituals, values, styles of language and behaviour. This encompasses the student understanding the use of the spoken, written and visual language in the academic community. With the knowledge of academic discourse, the student can interpret and create understanding of their own, known as deep learning (Marton et.al.,1997 as cited in Northedge, 2003, p 26). Similarly, not having a thorough understanding of the academic discourse may result in mis-interpreting the linguistic style used in academic settings, and results in poor understanding and presentation of knowledge from the student. Knowledge is ones internal interpretation of external information stimuli is applied, processed in the short term memory and may or may not be transferred to long term memory for later retrieval (Trigwell Prosser, 1997). But how is knowledge transferred? One learns by constructing their own understanding of the information being fed to them and this is influenced by the medium from which they are learning from. As mentioned, students different personal contexts will influence how they approach and interpret the information fed to them and the resulting knowledge they acquire. Biggs (1993 as cited in Trigwell Prosser, 1997) proposed the 3P model of learning as pictured below: This model depicts the various ways in which students approach learning what they do to learn, their attitudes and beliefs about learning, perception of the content and its delivery, learning outcomes and course design resulting in the knowledge transmitted. This was the time when the United States wanted to expand and grow rapidly as a land, and to achieve this goal, the Native Americans were â€Å"pushed† westward. Soldiers killed every men and women on their way or they were taken as prisoners , and about 30 Cherokee towns were left without any supplies. This was known as the Cherokee Campaign. The American Revolution ended with peace agreements with the Cherokee Indians, and they gave up all the lands in the east of the Appalachians. Between 1776 and 1794 there were several treaties, campaigns, frontier battles of the Cherokees during and after the American Revolution against the American frontiersmen. This period was called the Chickamauga Wars which was a guerrilla-style war. . In November 1794 the Treaty of Tellico Blockhouse was signed and this meant the end of the Chickamauga Wars. The blockhouse ran until 1807 and its purpose was to keep the peace between the nearby Overhill Cherokee towns and the Euro-American settlers. In 1827 they proposed a written constitution which was adopted by the Cherokee National Council and it was the creation of the Cherokee republic. According to this Constitutional Convention the Cherokee tribe and the whites should adopt peace in terms of self government.
